What is this in Portuguese

Indefinite articles:

You already learnt the definite articles. Now the indefinite ones:

Singular
MasculinoFeminino
UMUMA
Plural
MasculinoFeminino
UNS*UMAS*

* = The meaning of the words UNS and UMAS has changed. Now, they mean “some” or “a few”. For the plural, we don’t use any article.

In English, we put an “a” or “an” according to the word next. In Portuguese we put “um” or “uma”, according to the next word’s gender. “UM” for masculine words and “UMA” for feminine words.

Masculino
Um dicionário (a dictionary)
Um quadro (a board)
Um relógio (a clock)
Um livro (a book)
Um computador (a computer)
Um jornal (a newspaper)
Um mapa (a map)

Uma secretária (a desk)
Uma janela (a window)
Uma parede (a Wall)
Uma caneta (a pen)

um livro
uma mesa

livros
mesas
relógios
mapas
paredes
irmãs

Nouns ending in -R, -S or -Z

Nouns ending in -L

(we drop the -L and add -IS)

Some nouns are invariables:

um lápis

Finally, let’s learn some expressions that you can use in a classroom (or in another situation) to interact with your teacher or colleagues:

Não compreendo. / I don´t understand.
Não sei. / I don´t know.
Como se diz chair em português? / How DO you say chair in portuguese?
Como se escreve relógio? / How do you write relógio?
O que significa caneta? / What does caneta mean?
Pode escrever no quadro? / Can you write on the board?
Pode repetir? / Can you repeat?
Qual é a página? / Which is the page?

In Portuguese, we have three words (isto, isso and aquilo) for the english words “this” and “that”. Below, you can see when you should use them:

ISTO (this): For things that are close to the person who talks

ISSO (that): For things that are close to the person who listens

AQUILO (that): For things that are away from both

Then, to ask “what is” something you should say “o que é”, as you can see on the examples:

O que é isso? (what is this?)

Isto é um dicionário de Português-Francês

– O que é isto? (what is that?)

Isso é uma secretária.

O que é aquilo? (what is that, over there?)

Aquilo é um mapa.

The colors

Here they are, the main colors:

Singular
Masculino / Feminino

Vermelho / Vermelha

Amarelo / Amarela

Branco / Branca

Castanho / Castanha

Roxo / Roxa

Preto / Preta

Cinzento / Cinzenta

Azul

Verde

Cor de rosa

Cor de laranja

Plural
Masculino / Feminino

Vermelhos / Vermelhas

Amarelos / Amarelas

Brancos / Brancas

Castanhos / Castanhas

Roxos / Roxas

Pretos / Pretas

Cinzentos / Cinzentas

Azuis

Verdes

Cor de rosa

Cor de laranja

Observing the table, you can notice that:

  • If the masculine ends with “O”, the feminine ends with “A”. To form the plural, we add an “S” at the end: (Amarelo/amarela; branco/branca; pretos/pretas)

SINGULAR: o relógio é castanho / a cadeira é castanha.

PLURAL: Os relógios são castanhos/ as cadeiras são castanhas.

  • If the masculine ends with “E”, the feminine is the same. To form the plural, we add an “S” at the end:

SINGULAR: O lápis é verde. / A parede é verde.

PLURAL: Os lápis são verdes. / As paredes são verdes.

  • If the masculine ends with “L”, the feminine is the same (Azul/Azul). To form the plural, the “L” at the end drops and we add “is” (azul/azuis):

SINGULAR: O livro é azul. / A caneta é azul.

PLURAL: Os livros são azuis. / As canetas são azuis.

  • Cor de rosa and cor de laranja are invariable. It’s common to just say “rosa” or “laranja” instead of the all expression: (Uma caneta cor de rosa = uma caneta rosa)

SINGULAR: Um relógio cor de laranja. / Uma parede cor de laranja

PLURAL: Relógios cor de laranja. / Paredes cor de laranja.

  • Note: the colors and the adjectives in general are placed after the noun:

–     O quadro branco.

–     A mesa castanha.

–     O relógio preto.

Finally, to express the possession (the owner of something) we use the proposition DE (of).

Remember: DE + O = DO  /  DE + A = DA

  • O livro da = The book of Joana
  • O relógio do = The watch of Pedro
  • O mapa de = The map of Portugal.
  • A caneta da = The pen of Sofia

Notice: with famous people (mostly artists, writers…) we don´t use the definite article before the name: O quadro de Pablo Picasso.  O livro de Oscar Wilde.

If you want to ask a question about the color, you use the form “de que”, as you can see on the next examples:

  • De que cor é a caneta da Joana? = What color is joana´s pen?

A caneta da Joana é azul. = The pen of Joana is blue.

  • De que cor é o computador do Rui? = What colour is Rui’s computer?

O computador do Rui é cinzento. = The computer of Rui is grey.
